Bought for my nephew. Came quickly. looked like a quality book.

Read book for epals so same was recommended by children in class. In fact my epal advised that the class actually did a mock up mummy so it at least impressed them enough to keep their interest. Well written and informative.

Mummies by Joyce Milton gives children in the first three grades a lot of information in 48 short pages. The author has carefully crafted the book to suit the targeted age level. She put a lot of good solid text in her book, not simply a few words to describe the art work. She does not talk down to her readers but brings her readers up. The long bits of text will be a challenge to the first graders but the third graders will do fine. I like it that the younger readers have something more meaty to chew on. She also does not either dismiss or trivialize the culture that created the mummies but rather she seeks to bring some bit of understanding of that culture to the readers. Milton also inserts directions for how to say some unfamiliar, foreign words. That is a real service for the children. I also like the style of the art by illustrator Susan Swan. She makes the drawings seem like they are made from paper cut outs. The main focus of each picture really pops out at the reader.

About 2 years ago, my 2nd graders became fascinated with mummies. This led me to create an impromtu unit and gather several books on the subject. MUMMIES is a great resource in my collection as it takes the reader step by step through the mummification process. To highlight that, there are wonderful illustrations.

My 2nd graders are in love with this book. Most of the pictures are drawings...so not too scary for even younger kids. But there is one real picture of a mummy, which is, of course, my kids' favorite page! Take a fascinating topic and well-done pictures with interesting text and you've got yourself a great book!
