This is a review of the translation from print to Kindle, not the book itself. I am about 50% through and I want to meet the person who prepared the Kindle edition and bitch slap them. This book jumps back and forth between characters and from the past to the present and back again. Unfortunately, there is no marker to signal these changes. No white space between the paragraphs, no graphic symbol or lines or dots. Consequently, one second you're reading dialog between two characters in the present and with no separation or break of any sort, the next second you're reading dialog between two different characters in the past. This is making it almost impossible to read, let alone enjoy. Shame on the publisher and Amazon for releasing such a crappy version and for not doing anything to fix it.
**PLEASE READ THROUGH TO THE ADDITION AT THE END**This isn't a review of the book per se, but a warning to other Kindle owners as to what to expect from this freebie. You are about to get what you paid for. Harper Collins should be ashamed at themselves for rushing to market a very poorly scanned edition of one of Jance's older works in order to plug her newest book. It's what literary marketing has become, and it won't change until we readers start complaining. While it's hard to complain about something given for free, I feel a small entitlement since I've been a faithful Jance fan for 20 years. I've paid my dues with many full priced books. That Harper Collins would allow this to be published without having even an intern proof the OCR for miss-reads is a sad commentary on the greed of the publishing world. Let me say this as clearly as possible: this book is painful to read. One of the joys of reading a good book is being transported via the author's skill to another place and immersing yourself in the world they've created. I find it virtually impossible to do that when the gibberish typos keep drawing me back to the real world. Don't misunderstand- I will put up with the OCR mistakes in many other free ebooks when they are classics that have been scanned and formatted by volunteers. For a world-wide leader in publishing to do so is beyond excuse.Additionally, Amazon should be ashamed for using the e-publishing date instead of the original 1991 publication date. When all is said and done, this is a good book marred by sloppy publishing. It's not Jance's best, but it is still a worthwhile read if you are willing to deal with the jarring typos.**9/22/10- As I discussed in the comments which follow, Ms. Jance got this fixed! If you've previously downloaded the typo laden version, you'll need to delete it (go to "Manage My Kindle" and click the plus sign next to the title, then delete) before you can download this one. I haven't looked at the revised edition yet but I have faith that it is what it should be.I have to give a grudging thank you to Harper Collins for making this right, but mostly this was due to Ms. Jance's efforts. We corresponded several times after I brought this to her attention and believe me when I say her concern for her readers was very evident. Congrats JAJ!!I have also upgraded my rating to 4 stars, which is what I said I'd have given it without the typos.
J.A Jance has become one of my favorite, preferred authors. The Ali Reynolds series is quickly becoming my favorite series of the four she has written: J.P. Beaumont (Seattle, WA Policeman Detective) was her first series, Joanne Brady (Cochise Country, AZ Sheriff; my favorite and my introduction to the southwest when I moved to Cochise County, AZ 3 years ago), and the Walker Family (Pima County (Tucson), AZ Sheriff) is her fourth series are all excellent. Having said that, it would be very difficult for me to decide which of the four series is my favorite. I supposed the favorite would have to be whichever series Jances' latest book is from. Can't wait to read more!My only other favorite, preferred authors is Kathy Reichs, author of the "Temperance Brennan" or "Bones" series, which I would assume most TV watchers and medical/forensic mystery readers know of. She writes several series as well: Virals (teenage mysteries)' Exposure, Code and Seizure. As both a retired U.S. Army NCO and forensic psychologist, I find these series extremely engrossing and highly enjoyable. I would recommend them to anyone who has an interest in mystery stories. The Reich series for medical/forensic/police mysteries and J.A. Jance for non-standard Sheriff/police mysteries. They are truly worth your time and energy. And, on Kindle especially, the price is inconsequential.
I was pleasantly surprised. I read series and I have been reading two from JA Jance over a course of several years. I started with Beaumont which I like a lot. Later I started through the Brady books which for me have a little too much mother/daughter relationship problems intertwined with the mystery but I'm sure some enjoy that aspect of the series. Most recently I've been trying to complete my reading of those two series in publication order but I realized that my next Beaumont involves the Walker Family and so I decided I needed to read the Walker books before the Beaumont. In a lot of ways I think this may be Jance's best work. It combines Native American and shall I say Anglo characters in a charming way. I can't say the mystery is Hillerman class and the Native American mysticism is presented as real not unlike the Aimee Thurlo books I read a decade ago mostly because she was then an online friend of mine. The interplay between the two cultures was well presented here and it and not the suspense was the high point of the book.
