Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was an English Baptist pastor at New Park Street Chapel, London (which later became the Metropolitan Tabernacle), for thirty-eight years. About the best daily devotional you could hope to find - a classic. This modern English version is well done and much easier to read than the original; I switched over mid-year and it's so nice. One major drawback cost this book a star -- the print is so doggone tiny! I have to use a bookmark to keep my place moving from line to line. Makes me feel like a first-grader just learning to read. :-)

There is definitely something special in the way Spurgeon writes. I have heard many people describe him as one of the greatest preachers who ever lived . . . and reading his writings like those collected in this devotional, it's not hard to see why. He writes with a certain authority and security in the knowledge of the information he presents, yet does not allow his language to go over his readers heads (some of his more complex writings can be very difficult to follow). If you are looking for a sound devotional or regular personal study guide, I would highly recommend this one.

I was an avid reader of Oswald Chambers "My Utmost For His Highest" (which I still very much love and appreciate!) for some 4 years or so, until this book was given to me in hard copy about 2 1/2 years ago. I always loved Spurgeons' many quotes when I ran across them, so I immediately dove into this devotional.I have never been both SO convicted, and yet SO VERY encouraged by one tome, save the Bible itself!! This has been my daily go to devotional since, and likely will be so the rest of my days. I've since purchased 2 copies for gifts, and have my digital copy so loaded with notes and highlights, it almost needs its OWN memory card!!I simply cannot WAIT to set off on another years journey of getting to know my Savior, Jesus Christ, better through the many wonderful contemplations of my dearly departed brother Charles H. Spurgeon!

This daily devotional is not separated by days, with a morning and evening entry for each calendar day. Instead, there are 31 unnumbered entries for each month morning ("January AM"), followed by 31 unnumbered entries for "January PM" etc. I suppose a reader could mark each spot as the month progresses, but a daily devotional based on the calendar have a layout tied to an actual calendar. And separating the AM from the PM necessitates flipping back and forth. Finally, the font is tiny. I bought this as a gift for an elderly person, and not even the best of cheaters will make this an easy read for her.

This is a wonderful updated book by Alistair Begg of the Morning and Evening classic by Charles H. Spurgeon. I read another updated book of this title and also the original English. All of beautiful, but I really am enjoying this updated version by Alistair Begg, he saves the beautiful language, but does make it a little easier to understand for our time and place. He keeps the update true to the original, very enjoyable and uplifting in my spiritual growth. Highly Recommended!

With insight and appropriate application, Spurgeon's teachings lead the believer to a deeper personal relationship with Christ. Each devotional entry is filled with 'meat' rather than the often 'milky' devotionals so popular for those seeking a feel-good Christianity. This is not the prosperity gospel of today's TV evangelists rather the true Gospel that mankind is sinful yet God wants each to have a personal relationship with Him through His son Jesus. One can learn from Spurgeon it is not just a simple rote prayer asking for forgiveness but day-by-day or even minute-by-minute setting one's sight on things unseen. He shares the hope of powerful, loving God protecting His children around the clock. In these times, every believer needs more than a daily "quiet time" taught as a way of discipleship; we need to focus on Truth both Morning & Evening to live as an alien in today's world. This book is a great option to help meet that need in a vernacular better understood than the formal writing of the late 19th century.

This is far and away the best devotional book I have read. Extremely well written and inspirational. All meat and no fluff. Easy to read and it gives you lots to contemplate as you go about your day. I love it so much that I have bought two more as gifts. Charles H. Spurgeon was a wonderful writer and Alister Begg has brought this forward out of King James English for our generation. Can't say enough good about this book.

A very concise and engaging way to start your morning and to end your day. A hard hitting, take me right to what I need to be told about Christ's life changing power and how I should be living it out in my life, kind of book. Highly recommend this book. It has been a helpful guide for believers for generations.
