I was disappointed to see when this arrived that it was the size of a small magazine. There’s no way to justify calling this any more than a “booklet”, let alone charging $13 for it. It’s 83 pages, and most of that is headings.

I really enjoyed the book, I could not put it down. I wish church school classes would dig into this kind of study. It really adds a lot of depth to the Old Testament, and even non-church readers may learn a lot while not feeling they are pushed into religion.

Excellent reading. Author has an easy going style. Wish it was more detailed.

It is obvious early on that the author does nit believe in God, and that probably colors his rendition. But the biggest problem with this book is that it is historically inaccurate. The highest point of ancient Israel from a political standpoint was when they were a United kingdom under King Solomon. When they split into the kingdom's of Israel and Judah they were not only more vulnerable to enemies, but they were often at civil war with each other! Also, the author states that the kingship of both kingdom's passed from father to son. Again, this is incorrect. One only needs to read down the list of kings of the northern kingdom of Israel to see that often the throne was taken over by someone who assassinated the king. Usually, a member of the military, but sometimes another relative, but not a son. There may be more inaccuracies, but I saw no point to read beyond the first chapter.

First, the official disclaimer: I received an advance copy of this book for the purposes of writing a review.Second, I have a Master of Christian Education and am a semi-retired minister. Therefore my perspective may be somewhat different from other readers and reviewers.Third: I am a former homeschool parent; having homeschooled six children through their entire pre-college academic careers.Now, on to the important stuff.I found "Ancient Israel" to be a much better than average treatment of the history and development of Israel as a people and a nation. While I would not use it as a primary text, it is a fine supplemental text for those wishing to expand their understanding of the Biblical account of the people and nation of Israel.The strengths of the work are found mostly in the opening chapters dealing with the culture, role of women, education in Israeli society, and their diet. These chapters, while brief, provide the reader with an excellent working understanding of what life was like in ancient Israel. For homeschoolers and those studying the Bible, these chapters will supplement the Biblical text and expand general background knowledge.The chapters concerning what is called the Intertestamental Period (that period of history between the end of the Old Testament book of Malachi and the beginning of the New Testament) are also a strength of the book. The information given, while concise, is very helpful in understanding the foundations of the modern state of Israel and the current geopolitical situation.The weakness of the work is found in the discussion of the Northern (Israel) and Southern (Judah) kingdoms. The Bible and much of early archaeology detail a significant period built around a united kingdom under the kingships of Saul, David, and Solomon. The effort to erase the acknowledgment of these kings is a very recent development that reflects political tensions of the region. The decision to not even mention this period in the history of Israel is a significant failure of the work. This also disrupts both the historical and literary flow of the book.Having said that, these failures do not make the book any less useful for the casual student or the homeschool parent seeking to expand their history and or Bible curriculum. The reader should be aware that this is not a theology book or Bible study, but for what it is (a supplement) I can heartily recommend it.
