Stephen L. Moore, a sixth-generation Texan, graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he studied advertising, marketing, and journalism. He is the author of multiple books on World War II and Texas history, including Pacific Payback: The Carrier Fly Boys Who Avenged Pearl Harbor at the Battle of Midway and Taming Texas, a biography of his great-great-great-grandfather William T. Sadler, who was one of the first Texas Ranger captains in the 1830s. Steve lives north of Dallas in Lantana, Texas, with his wife, Cindy, and their three children.

I am a WW2 history buff and am always interested in new books. This one came up in a recent search and I received it as a gift for Christmas.I am currently about 3/4 of the way through and am enjoying the book. This is one of those books that does a create job sharing the challenges and experiences of the Navy and Marine flyers in WW2.The book covered more than I expected starting with a detailed discussion of the battle of the Coral Sea. It does not really cover Midway and then goes into Guadalcanal.It provides great details about individual aircraft and their pilots and gunners. It provides a real world view into the flying missions and challenges that the pilots faced and allows you to track the careers of specific pilots.Overall, I really like this book and would recommend it to others. In many ways, it is complementary to Hornfischer's "Neptune's Inferno" which covers the Navy's actions at Guadalcanal and is another great read.

As the son of a USMC radio gunner in an SBD squadron from '42 to '45, I had to get this book. It is a terrific account of the battles and sacrifices during 1942 by Navy and Marine aviation units. Some military histories are done in a clinical manner providing minute details about the order of battle while others are just stories of the participants. Mr. Moore skillfully blends both together in his accounts of battles mostly in the Solomon Islands in '42. His detailed descriptions of what happened to entire units and individual flight crews in fascinating. There is detail here that you will never encounter in books on this subject. It's a really rich description of how a relatively small groups of aircrew helped blunt the Japanese attempts at expansion. Given how few of these men remain, it is great that their stories have been recorded.

Had a teacher who was said to have been a pilot here. He would never mention it. Now I understand. Minimal supplies. Always on the verge of losing everything. Lots of heroism and few real hits on ships. Those that did were critical. Men and planes lost on ill advised missions. All in a battle we couldn't afford to lose. Maybe the book gets bogged down in the pilots and not the action, but plenty of that. Great read.

I found the book a very good reference, and offered a unique perspective on Guadalcanal. It covers in great detail the individual members of the air groups on the early WWII carriers, as well as Coral Sea. It is not a chronology, as it doesn't really cover Midway. That said, it really gets into the depths of the daily life of the pilots and crew of those pilots who ultimately played a huge part in holding Guadalcanal, and even to how the lack of food and sleep impacted their daily performance. Definitely worth reading.

I would have rated this book higher, but I felt that the author included a little too much information. I frankly wasn't interested in full rosters of the navy units involved and would have stuck them in the back of the book. The excessive detail got in the way of the story and I couldn't keep up with all of the names the author tosses about. It reads like a Civil War unit history published in the 1890s for sale to survivors of those units. I would consider it a supplementary read and suggest you have a pretty strong background on Guadalcanal and the war in the Pacific before you pick this up. If your father or grandfather flew with these guys it would be delightful to see his name in print and you should buy a copy.

Good work concentrating on SBD units and their pilots. Worth the read.

I never realized how difficult it was for the marines to take an island..

After reading the author's book on Midway, I was excited to hear this one was coming out as I found his Midway book to be really excellent. This one didn't live up to that standard for me, unfortunately. Way, way too many names to keep track of as he provided the name of each and every pilot and gunner for somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 American dive bombers. After awhile, the names all became a jumbled glob in my brain and I just sort of passed over them as I read.I think the idea for this story is a good one, but by limiting it to just the dive bombers I feel a good portion of the story is lost. Speaking of the story, it takes almost half the book before we get to Hell's Island, aka Guadalcanal. Way too much time spent on the early part of the war since the book is marketed as a book on Guadalcanal, but the author was trying to set up some background. Just wish he hadn't taken so long to get to the main part of the book because I was beginning to get fatigued by all the names and the mad jumble of units which are mentioned in the narrative.For those of you who like oral history, this book is full of personal quotes and stories from many of the aviators mentioned in the book--this is the real high point. You get to sit right in the cockpit with many of the pilots and know what what they were thinking as they plunged down on a Japanese carrier or were trying to dodge Zeros and anti-aircraft fire.The book could have used a little bit better editing to help with the narrative flow, and how Admiral Raymond Spruance's name popped up in the middle of a naval battle off Guadalcanal for no reason is definitely a mystery. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 stars as it's a great testimony to the men and machines which helped turn back the tide of Japanese expansion in the early part of the war in the Pacific.
