I'm taking an online crash course in web development at my local college and this is the textbook for the class. I could not stress enough how much the entire class revolves around this book. Every single chapter is a tutorial that walks you through the process of writing each line of code and then the review problems at the end of the chapter are real examples. You are given shells for each web page you are `working on` as you progress through the book so you can focus on learning each new concept instead of having to write a whole web page for each case study.All of the books files/materials are available free online on the cengage website and are not difficult to find. I have learned so much from this book and I can confidently build a functional, dynamic web page with html css and javascript having read through the entire book. One of the things you get from a textbook that you don't get from YouTube videos and online tutorials is thorough explanation of each building block.If you are new to programming with no background the Javascript part may tough as it moves very quickly assuming you understand the basic concepts of programming.GREAT BOOK !

The book itself looks great and at over 1,300 pages it is clearly very extensive and well laid out and colorful. So why 1 star? Publisher Cengage Learning is the worst support firm on earth. You want source code, you need an access code that you can't have it. WTF! Just pathetic and for the price just look elsewhere.

I guess the book is OK, he passed the class...and on the Deans list again this year :) Sending it back for the next student.....

This is the worst textbook I have ever used in any college course, ever. The electronic book comes with a built-in grading software for the code assignments- this sounds great in theory, but it's utterly useless in practice because this software is EXTREMELY quirky. For example, if your code is 95% correct, the software is so nit-picky, it may assign a grade of 20% rather than 95% because one or two semicolons were in the wrong place. The built-in code checker does absolutely NOTHING to help students troubleshoot errors in their code- the only feedback you get is "Code incorrect, 0 out of 10 points". Students are basically left completely on their own to figure out what's wrong. Cengage tech support took a whopping 17 DAYS to reply to my request for assistance- and then their reply was "We were not able to replicate the problem." By then, the deadline for the assignment had passed. If you're buying this textbook, chances are it's for a course...the only way this would work is if the teacher is willing to manually override the computer autograder's faulty grading. My suggestion is to drop any course that uses this textbook! It's THAT bad!

I bought this book primarily because it is used by courses that I will have to take in the near future, but I needed to learn some HTML and CSS ahead for work reasons and for personal pleasure. Needless to say, this book is not meant for self-teaching. You need access keys for material online from a professor or pay for a subscription in addition to spending money on the book. Don't buy it unless you are enrolled in a class. Since I fold my books in contact paper, I cannot return it. I'll have to keep my fingers crossed that when I take the classes on web technologies, etc. , the professor uses this book and I get an access key. Otherwise, I wasted my money. I had to go an buy another book from another publisher that offers the online material without having to be enrolled in a class or pay for a subscription service. Murach is one of those publishers or Pearson in some of their series. This is my first experience with Cengage and it may be my last. I had to give it 1 out of 5 stars because I wasted my money and can't use the book for now.... also, I tried to get support from them. You have to register through their website and they expect you to have access keys, etc. If you are looking for a book to help you teach yourself this is NOT a good alternative. It does look like a great book if you are willing to pay for access or enroll in a class. Since my purpose at this moment was to teach myself, I shot myself in the foot by buying this one.
