When I first saw this book in stores, I thought that it would be Aristotelian logic applied to political and advertising statements. I figured I had a pretty good crap meter already and would not need the information, however, when the book was recommended by an audio course I was taking, I ordered it. Clever, humorous writing making clear illogical subtleties that you might already know but often fail to recognize because they are so surreptitious. Reading it has made me even more aware of the nonsense that passes are legitimate argument these days.
This is my first book on the topic of logic and a great introduction for anyone curious about logical debate as well as an interesting read for anyone looking to understand how logic plays a role in (or therefore lack of) our everyday lives. Clearly written, Jamie Whyte does a great job of relating his expertise in logic/philosophy to situations and arguments we hear on a daily basis, with real-life examples and explanations. He is able to balance a clear and direct explanation for a lay-person while providing enough clarification that may also be enjoyed by someone more familiar and adept at logical or philosophical debate. A quick read, perfect for a day off, this book will make you feel more enlightened and have you questioning the arguments of your family and friends...in a good way.
Logic is the frequent victim in our political debates, TV panels, newspaper editorials, and so forth so somebody had to stand up for it and this book does that. Not only does it expose the logic falacies that we hear so much in the news media, it does so in an entertaining way, so it is a fun book to read. Some religious people seem to find it offensive, so if you are a "believer" you may wish to stay away from the book.I have one minor quibble. Whyte ignores the social context of arguments that introduce implicit factors in the debate. For example, in the second chapter, he points out that people dismiss arguments by point out that the person who makes the argument has an ulterior motive. He points out correctly that an argument may be valid regardless of the motives of the person making it. In reality people look at things not only logically, but also in Bayesian terms. If I have heard person Z several times making arguments that were proven false and in each case he/she had a motive making them, then I can classify Z as someone who routinely makes invalid arguments when he/she has a motive. Then I can save time in the future by dismissing off hand any of his/hers arguments when there is a motive behind them.
This book discusses some of the common fallacies found in everyday and political discourse. I found the book pleasant to read but not really satisfying. I wish the author included more everyday examples, with more details about the fallacies commited by law- and policy-makers.I think the main problem about this book is the lack of a more detailed discussion about probable inference and also about truth. It does not matter whether an argument is logically correct and its conclusions logically true if the premises are incorrect. Nowhere I found in this book a detailed discussion about the validity of the premises. In fact, some of the examples presented by the author reflect more his opinion than matters of fact (perhaps a light example of the fallacy of appeal to authority?).Overall, I actually liked reading it, and found some examples interesting. I strongly recommend this book.
I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in clear thinking, logical argumentation, and clearing away fuzzy thought patterns. This book should be required reading for all college students and anyone interested in a lucid design for reasoning.
I read this book slowly because I just didn't want it to end. Unfortunately it it was far too short for me. Whyte will make you think and if you are like me, you may realize that you commit crimes against logic like many around you. Hopefully with the aid of this book you can decrease your crimes. He educates and entertains you. I think there are many more types of crimes that Whyte could have talked about, but this is an excellent start. Once you read this book you will be able to pick up more and more unlogical statements that are far too prevelant.Whyte may sound a bit angry/frustrated at times, but he has every right to. Any stickler for clear and logical thinking will be able to empathize with him. Humans need to pursue the truth more rigorously and Whyte helps us do this better. Religious people will probably find Whyte's logic offensive. I doubt that any Christian (or Muslim or Jew) has become an atheist as a result of this book. Even if you have objections to Whyte's logic, this book will make you smarter. It forces you to think which can only be good exercise for your brain. Read it and pass it on to a voter.
I enjoyed this book immensely, as well as gaining quite a bit of knowledge. Whyte hits upon two topics that I particularly enjoyed. "Entitled to one's opinion" and "Begging the Question".It's a quick read, perhaps a day or two; at least for me, I had a hard time putting it down.I found it very helpful in spotting the actual errors in logic that I felt I was hearing or seeing in various sources, but didn't quite have the words to explain why it was illogical. The book is in a similar vein as the internet film - Here Be Dragons .
