No matter how many hose books you own or read, no matter how long you have been involved in horses, no matter how many clinicians you are familiar with, or how many lessons you took or seminar you attended, Tania Kindersley's book will enchant you, teach you things, or remind you of the great horsemanship principles you may be aware of, but often fail to put in practice. Allowing a horse to be a horse, being in control (of oneself !), learning to be still and polishing the basics (Ray Hunt's famous "take Square One with you) are only a few examples of how needed, profound, enjoyable and worthy this book is. Icing on the cake, Tania's prose is ravishing and will alternately put a smile on your face or bring tears to your eyes, and not unlikely both at the same time. Tania has learned from the best horsemen in the world, alive or dead, but mostly she's learned from the one superior horsemanship teacher on the planet : her own thorougbred mare. For, really, who knows better about horses but the horse itself ?? DO yourself a favor, purchase this book, read it and re-read it, then maybe read it again, and keep it in mind when you set out to work with your equine companion. You both will be much better off for it.

It is so refreshing to read a book on horsemanship that is, first, concerned primarily with understanding that horse behavior is always an attempt to communicate, and second, patient with the humans who are trying to learn the language. Tania's willingness to share her change of attitude, her mistakes, and the teachings that made the shift has created a much more instructive and inviting narrative than the "how to" books written by the experts. I'm so glad she took the chance and decided to write from the "novice" perspective (though I might challenge that term, given that so many horse "experts" have not yet learned these basic principles).The photo on the cover says it all. It's not about the perky ears and the liquid eyes that we all try to capture in photos. It's about the loose lower lip, the heavy eyelids, and the relaxed carriage that says, "I trust you enough to doze while you keep me safe."I am just beginning on this journey, and I have often felt so ashamed of my blunders that I thought I should simply give up, despite reading every book by the masters. Tania's gentle encouragement and insistence on the potential of both horse and human has been a godsend to my psyche, and therefore to my horse partners. She believes in her readers almost as much as she believes in her red mare, which is really saying something.

Tania Kindersley shows enormous dedication in her quest to understand her horses, and in the knowing, create the happiest life possible for them. She's put her experience, her learning and her errors to good use by taking others along for the metaphorical ride, and in the process hopefully shared a very important message.I read this as a part of searching for any way I could to get over my newly (re-)developed fear of being in the saddle. A devastating experience for me, because having found the courage to get back into the saddle after many yeas away was one of the most wonderful things in my life. Unfortunately a few small, silly incidents over a short time, shook my confidence to the core.I can't say that I found a new way to communicate with horses here - but it helped me enormously to remember that it's up to me to have the courage to lead the horse I'm riding, instead of being merely a lump of nervous energy, hoping that the horse I'm on is sensible and relaxed. I'm digging deep for my Lead Mare energy now, and the simple fact of reminding myself of that has helped enormously.I gave the writing 4 stars. The extra star is for the fact that she's spreading a message that deserves the biggest audience possible.

This book helped me understand so much more about my journey with me own mare who has not been at all what I thought I had bought. But has turned out to be so much more in unexpected ways. Being able to relate to the authors journey which is what I am now going through has given me so much hope but based on wisdom that I will carry with me forever. A great tool to take with me on my learning journey. I highly recommend this book to any horse person looking to do it better for the horses.

This is the book I wish I had in my hands 12 years ago when I got back into horses. I've read all the "Masters." Really, I have. My schedule was such that each week I had a couple afternoons of barn time - so I supplemented my passion by reading and watching videos. How I yearned for someone to help me with the very basics. I knew this was the key and yet could not find it anywhere.Tania explains the deep fundamentals beautifully. I cannot begin to express how thankfull I am for you writing all this and put into words, what I have felt but never quite could phrase correctly . The fact that also in my club I have to fight the norm and be the maverick, and just like you, being not a real well known trainer, just someone who got a racehorse to deal with, trying to figure out how she can become a willing partner. I just generally listened to my intuition and it took me many more years. Had to fight against all the advice, to show her who is boss, put on bigger bit etc. Even now, since I have lost my trust in myself and her after she came back from a terrible liver disease, and almost died several times, my monkey in my head always chattering, Is she OK? has made it very difficult the past year, trying to get back the trust and willingness, and now I finally understand again why. Thank you again, for helping me realize and getting me back on the road hopefully, of recovery to where I have hope that we can be partners again.
